Calling all homeschoolers: your friendly librarian needs some advice. Liz B. of A Chair, a Fireplace, and a Tea Cozy, one of our favorite blogs, is wondering what homeschooling magazines might be most useful for her patrons. Budgets being what they are, she can only choose one. Liz writes, “What I am looking for is something that would have the broadest appeal possible, to as many types of homeschoolers/unschoolers/worldschoolers/all the other schoolers as possible.”
My choice would be Home Education Magazine, which is the only homeschooling subscription I’ve stuck with over the past six years. Its articles are well written and engaging; they range over a wide field of topics and viewpoints (tipping somewhat toward an unschooling or natural learning perspective, but not exclusively). I especially appreciate the sensible and shrewd commentary on homeschooling law and politics. Most of all, though, I enjoy the personal flavor of the articles, the glimpses into other people’s homes, the enthusiasm with which the writers share their ideas and experiences.
How about the rest of you? I’d like to give Liz some good feedback here. What are your top five homeschooling publications, and why?

HEM, too. But what is “worldschooling”? Google has nada.
I like HEM too. There is also The Link. Lots of different points of view about homeschooling and it’s free! You can read it online, but they’ll send you the paper copy free if you sign-up. It wouldn’t cost the librarian anything and then she could afford to have two homeschool periodicals.

I think HEM is the go-to magazine for home educators of all different flavors. For unschooling, I also like Live Free, Learn Free.

HEM for me too — for about 18 years now. I really miss Growing Without Schooling though.
Life Learning Magazine is good for unschoolers/eclectic learners. I like the sectin where they feature adults that were home/unschooled.

Daryl, Worldschooling is Phatmommy’s new term for what we do.
We don’t read any homeschool magazines. My son gets SI for Kids, and Reptiles. My daughter gets 4 or 5 Equestrian magazines.
Phatmommy’s coinage was “WorldLearning”–I bet that’s what Liz was thinking of.
The Old Schoolhouse is my favorite. I absolutely love it!
hmmm…you’d probably need to know what the homeschooling population in her area is like. I personally like Homeschool Enrichment Magazine the best, but it has a somewhat narrower audience and is decidedly Christian in perspective. I’m not just biased because they accepted my article. Really.
