E. B. White, Blogger?

Michael at Family School is reading a book of essays by the author of Charlotte’s Web, and here’s what he has to say about it:

Lately I’ve been reading One Man’s Meat by E.B. White. I’ve decided this book is a blog from a time before blogs.

Since I consider even (Strunk and) White’s grammar text, The Elements of Style, to be pleasure-reading, One Man’s Meat is definitely going to the top of my must-read pile.

  1. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am. There’s even a passage early on in which White discusses reviewing children’s books. He parodies some of the common faults in chilren’s literature. At this point in his life, I don’t think he had considered writing kids’ books himself, so it’s especially interesting to get a peek into his mind at this phase.

  2. In the olden days (I absolutely refuse to subscribe to that “back in the day” business lol), blogging was essay writing : ).
White is one of my all-time favorite writers; in fact, he’s one of the reasons I named my daugher after a spider lol. His various collections of essays (“Second Tree from the Corner” and “Points of My Compass” plus the collection of his letters) are not only wonderful and enjoyable but a terrific education in how to write. When I grow up, I want to be able to write as well as he did — simple and elegant.

  3. Whadda ya know!
A friend of mine (majored in journalism) sent me this book last fall and insisted that I read it.
I have it at my bedside now. : )
