the newberry news is depressing, but not really surprising based on our recent experiences. i am getting a little down about the library.
recently my 11-year-old went in and asked the children’s librarian (within my hearing) if she could recommend an adventure book that wasn’t part of a series — he thinks recent series are poorly written! — and not about wizards or dragons et al.
she said, “wow, welllllll ..” and thought and thought! and wasn’t sure what she could recommend! i was shocked. then, to add insult to injury, she asked what adventure book he’d already read that he enjoyed and when he replied “the three musketeers” she said, “which version?” and when he said “uhhhhhh .. the three musketeers .. is there more than one version?!” and explained he had read the original book, she seemed to not believe he had read it!
i was waiting for her to recommend a dozen books he’d already read – classics – and hopefully one he hadn’t .. but he ended up saying “thanks anyway” and walking away!
